Plant City’s captivating small town charm is not the only reason that this Central Florida town is sought by so many. Plant City is perfectly placed along the Interstate 4 corridor approximately 24 miles east of Tampa and 10 miles west of Lakeland. The Orlando theme parks of Disney, Sea World, and Universal Studios are sited just over one hour from this “winter strawberry capital of the world.” While close to all of the excitement of its metropolitan neighbors, Plant City has its own hometown entertainment that literally draws people from all over the country.
The Plant City Strawberry Festival is held every year during the last week of February/first week of March, when the berries are at their finest. This much anticipated event brings the biggest names in country music including entertainers Alan Jackson, Martina McBride, and even Garth Brooks has performed at this small-town fair that dates back to the 1930s. The approximately 34,250 residents of Plant City and numerous tourists enjoy one week full of big name and local entertainment, rides, strawberry shortcake, and arts and crafts.
Plant City’s rich agricultural history started with cotton production, but changing its major crop to strawberries gained this little town big recognition. Over three-quarters of the nation’s midwinter strawberry supply originates from Plant City. Plant City was originally known as Ichepucksassa in honor of the Indian village that once called this area home. In 1884 the South Florida Railroad extended into this region and one year later, when the town was incorporated, it was named in honor of the man who brought this progress, Henry B. Plant.
Plant City has grown to 26 square miles and while many new businesses, restaurants, and shops have continued to add to Plant City’s progress, its brick-lined streets in the gorgeous historic district reminds future generations of its humble beginnings. Beautiful city parks also add to residents’ enjoyment by offering such amenities as playgrounds, walking trails, baseball fields, basketball courts, and picnic pavilions. Plant City’s Recreation Department offers numerous opportunities to meet your neighbors with such activities as aerobics, country line dancing, jazzercise, teen nights, bridge club, senior field trips, and after school programs. City sponsored events include a July 4th celebration, an Easter egg hunt, youth fishing derbies, a winter lights celebration, and much more.
