Oviedo is a picturesque town located northeast of Orlando’s famous theme parks including Universal Studios, Sea World, Wet ‘n Wild, and Disney World. In less than one hour residents of Oviedo can find themselves soaking up the sun on Daytona Beach’s romantic shores or catching a flight to an exotic destination from Daytona’s International Airport. State Roads 417, 434, and 426 are the main roads through Oviedo as is County Road 419. The original Oviedo is a city in northern Spain that was established in the eighth century and is known for its architecture. Oviedo, Florida was actually named by a Swedish immigrant, Andrew Aulin in 1879, who as postmaster was asked to name the new post office and chose to give it a Spanish name in honor of Florida’s Spanish heritage.
Today Oviedo has its eyes on the future with the new construction of Oviedo on the Park. Oviedo on the Park is a new mixed-use development that will feature a residential area of single-family houses, townhomes, apartments, a commercial business district, and retail establishments. The expected completion of this new locale is between 2012 and 2015; other developments are also being built throughout the city offering residents of Oviedo new places to dine and shop. The city of Oviedo is part of Seminole County’s Public Schools and proudly boasts of its all A-rated schools. The city of Oviedo has four elementary schools including Evans, Lawton, Marguerite Partin, and Douglas Stenstrom Elementary; two middle schools including Jackson Heights and Lawton Chiles Middle; and one high school Oviedo High. There are three schools just outside of Oviedo’s city limits that serve the students of Oviedo including Carillon Elementary, Walker Elementary, and Hagerty High School. Numerous private schools are also located in Oviedo. Oviedo is home to a branch of Seminole Community College and is just minutes to the University of Central Florida in Orlando.
