Starke who led a group of slaves into what is now Ocoee. In 1881, Captain Bluford M. Sims, a native of Tennessee who served in the Confederacy, purchased a tract of land from Dr. Starke and established the first citrus nursery in the United States. Today, orange groves can still be seen throughout Ocoee, but this thriving town has grown significantly since its inception.
