It is believed that “Ocoee” is an Indian word that means “no cold” and this ideal Central Florida climate has been drawing people here for years. This area was founded in the mid 1850s by Dr. J.D. Starke who led a group of slaves into what is now Ocoee. In 1881, Captain Bluford M. Sims, a native of Tennessee who served in the Confederacy, purchased a tract of land from Dr. Starke and established the first citrus nursery in the United States. Today, orange groves can still be seen throughout Ocoee, but this thriving town has grown significantly since its inception.

Ocoee has averaged building more than one new home a day over the past seven years. Condos, townhomes, single-family homes, and luxury estates are all found in Ocoee. The median sales price of a single-family home in this sought-after locale is around $266,746.

Part of the Orange County Public School System, Ocoee has seven elementary schools including Citrus, Clarcona, Lake Whitney, Maxey, Ocoee, Spring Lake, and Thornebrooke Elementary. Middle schools in Ocoee include Gotha, Lakeview, and Ocoee. Ocoee high schools are West Orange, Olympia, and Ocoee. Nearby community colleges and universities include the University of Central Florida, Valencia Community College, and Westside Tech.
