Magnificent Maitland, Florida, is a beautiful community that is located less than 20 minutes from the bustling city of Orlando that is world famous for its many theme parks, restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. Home of the Florida Film Festival, Maitland is rich in culture and history. The U.S. Army established Fort Maitland in 1838 and named it after Captain William Seton Maitland who died in a battle in nearby Tampa during the Seminole Wars. Captain Maitland never had the opportunity to see this land of natural spring water and abundant pine forests that drew many people to this area after the Civil War. Maitland became a tourist destination early in its history, drawing such famous people as two American presidents, Grover Cleveland and Chester Arthur. While residents were planting their roots in Maitland, they were also planting orange trees which became a strong part of Maitland’s economy. The 1950s through the 1970s saw a major change in Maitland with the Martin Marietta Company moving from Baltimore to Orlando and relocating many employees into this picturesque suburb and Disney World creating a thriving tourist industry. Today Maitland is a growing community that still maintains its long history by preserving many of the still occupied historical homes located along the “historical corridor” in the Lake Lily-Lake Catherine area and extends through the central portion of Maitland.

Maitland has 17 parks that offer recreation for all ages including playgrounds, basketball courts, tennis courts, racquetball courts, picnic areas, boardwalks, jogging trails, horseshoes, shuffleboard, and much more. The parks of Maitland play host to many special events throughout the year such as movies in the park, the Spring Arts Festival, Taste of Maitland, and the Rotary Arts Festival. The Maitland Art Center has several special offerings for residents including museum exhibitions, art classes, and programs and lectures scheduled throughout the year.
