The earliest settlers to the Longwood area arrived in the early 1870s. One of the early founders of Longwood was E.W. Mr. Henck served with the honor guard that accompanied President Abraham Lincoln's body on the train trip from Washington to Illinois. On May 19, 1876, the Longwood Post Office was established with Henck as the first postmaster. Henck chose the name Longwood after a suburb of Boston, which had special meaning to him because as a young engineer he helped lay out that town. Ten years later, thanks to Henck’s efforts, Longwood had five churches, three hotels, eight stores, and a newspaper that was published weekly.
