Cox family moved to Lake Alfred and obtained two 40 acre citrus groves that the citrus age began in Lake Alfred and the city saw its first real growth. The city was named Lake Alfred in 1913 after the large lake in the area. Today, a serene bedroom community for commuters to Orlando and Tampa, Lake Alfred is also a town with its own businesses including a mix of traditional retail and service industries as well as many specialty businesses. Part of Polk County’s Public Schools, Lake Alfred is home to 10 different magnet schools which offer specialized programs in subjects like science, technology, and the performing arts.
