Incorporated in 1995, Deltona is a planned community that was created in 1962 by the Mackle brothers who bought 17,203 acres and began development. Deltona was originally marketed to senior citizens looking for a warm place to retire and in the 1970 census the average age of a resident in Deltona was 62. However, with the building of nearby Disney World and other amusement parks, the marketing strategy changed and a housing boom occurred in the 1980s and 1990s and the average age of a resident in Deltona was 35.
Today Deltona is still a growing community that offers many wonderful amenities close to home including golf, shopping, dining, and lodging. Over 100 lakes are in Deltona and comprise eight square miles of water! Needless to say, Deltona residents of all ages have many opportunities for fishing, boating, canoeing, and other water sports.
